Key U.S. Policy Priorities
Expand Transatlantic Trade: President Bush, German
Chancellor Angela Merkel and European Commission President Jose
Manuel Barroso signed the trans-Atlantic economic partnership
plan under which the two trading partners will establish a
framework for business integration by streamlining regulatory
standards that are often different between the trans-Atlantic
partners.
Open
Air Transport: The first-stage Air Transport Agreement
will replace all existing bilateral agreements between the
United States and EU member states and establish an Open-Skies
Plus framework between the United States and all 27 EU members.
Advance the
Doha Round: United States and European Union (EU) trade officials report
progress in efforts to revive stalled talks toward a new global trade
liberalization accord. Multilateral talks on the accord, being negotiated under
World Trade Organization (WTO) auspices, had been put on hold since the talks
collapsed in July 2006. “We are clearly making progress,” said U.S. Trade
Representative Susan Schwab, following a January 8 meeting with her EU
counterpart, Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson, in Washington.
Energy Security and Climate Change:
"We also talked about climate, and here we share a common interest: One, we
recognize that we have a problem with greenhouse gases; two, we recognize we
have a problem with a dependence on oil; three, we recognize that we can use
technologies to help solve this problem; and, four, we recognize we have an
obligation to work together to promote the technologies necessary to solve the
problem, and encourage the developing world to use those technologies" said
President Bush on the US-EU Summit in Washington, DC
on April 30, 2007.
Combat Transnational Crime and Terrorism: “Under the principles we’ve
set forth today, we will be able to strategize together on cases and enhance the
exchange of evidence to combat transnational crime,” said Attorney General
Alberto Gonzalez after signing an agreement with EUROJUST, the judicial
cooperation unit of the European Union, to improve coordination between
prosecutors in the two regions. "The agreement is one more example of our
efforts to work in concert with our European allies to attack the evil of
international terrorism.”
Extend the
Visa Waiver Program (VWP): Citizens of VWP countries can travel to the
United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without
obtaining a visa, so long as they have machine-readable passports. “We have a
roadmap for countries that are seeking admission to the program. We are
currently working with a number of those countries to see what we can do to help
them meet the milestones that are necessary to be admitted to the program,”
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, said.
